This series of objects combines plain turning and ornamental turning. I wanted to make the focus of each object a thin hollow body of beautiful wood, either left plain or fluted. The stems, pedestals, and tops are all African blackwood, ornamented with fluting and patterned cuts. The finials are also of blackwood, or in one case, of a Betel palm nut. Fluting and stem cuts were done on an ornamental lathe, while the forms themselves were hollowed out on a plain lathe. The wavy cuts on some of the tops and pedestals were done on a straight-line engine turning machine.
