Bob Stumbo

This Christmas ornament was turned and carved from a very wormy piece of ash.  The icicle and final are turned from cocobolo.  There is also a captive ring just underneath the globe (you can see it resting just above the bead)

Square edged bowl turned from black acacia, 4"X8"X2.5", the wings are 3/32nd of an inch thick.  There was little sanding needed because tool work left very few lines.  This bowl was made in a class with Stewart Batty, and he had us shapen our tool after every 2 passes.  The finish is lacquer, lightly buffed.

"Volcano I" is made of madrona burl, 9"X10"W, 4" high.  Working on this bowl was very interesting in that the cut and shape is different than anything I had turned before.  The bottom of the bowl complements the top so that it is nearly uniform in thickness throughout.  This bowl is best displayed on a mirror so you can see the bottom as well.

This natural edged bowl is turned from maple burl.  It was held using a jam chuck for the final turning as there is no foot on the bottom (the bottom is a sphere, complementary to the bowl shape you can see from the top).  Size is 7"X11"W, 2" high.  By marking the tool rest with tape, you can know where the end of the bowl is even though you cannot see it when while it is turning.  I turn most of my pieces at 1700 RPM for finishing.  The finish is lacquer with light buffing.  I turned this bowl on my Shopsmith, with great care.

These two goblets were turned a year apart.  The small goblet is cocobolo, the larger goblet is black acacia with no finish. The tall goblet was turned on the club's Woodfast lathe under the guidance of Stewart Batty.  The small goblet was turned in my shop using my Shopsmith.
