The candelabra body was turned from a large block of silver maple into a bowl shape with a pedestal foot.  After the turning and sanding were complete, the seven arching upright members were carefully drawn and cut out with a hand jig saw.  A rotary rasp and hand file was used to round over the corners and shape the arches and uprights.

The small “plates” were turned out of scrap from the silver maple.  Then the candle holders were turned from scrap corner pieces from purple heart round blanks.  The purple heart was a cut off that came from the Brigantine project in San Pedro where a 4-foot square by 80 feet long log was ripped for keels for the two boats being built. After turning and sanding, the candleholders were bathed with muriatic acid, which brings out and enhances the reds and purples in the wood.   After drying and oxidizing over night, they were finished with many coats of lacquer and polished.
